Frequently asked questions.

Do I need to supply my own timber or tools?

Absolutely not! All materials, timber, hardware, glue, etc, and all tools and equipment, everything needed for the course is supplied. Though, if you have any hand tools you want to use don’t hesitate to bring them along.

What if my friend and I book a course?

If you book with a friend The Timber Union can offer you, and your friend, a discount of $50 off any of our project courses, that is the Introduction to Woodworking, Table Making Course, and The Fred Chair.

In fact: If you have a group of 4 or more friends, or colleagues, The Timber Union can run a private course for you. Please, contact us if you would like more information in regards to private courses!

What should I wear?

Wear clothes that you can comfortably move about in, and are ok to get a bit dusty. ‘Sensible’ shoes that cover yours toes is important. Runners or boots are a good choice. The workshop has heating, and some cooling, so the temperature is usually comfortable to work in.

Do I need to bring my own safety equipment?

Absolutely not! Though, of course you can if you prefer. We have a full complement of PPE to use, including earmuffs, safety glasses and aprons to keep you covered.

What if I miss a week?

If you need to miss a week, or are sick and can’t attend a class, we can usually find time to make up what you missed before the next class at no extra cost.

Where can I buy timber for a project I am planning to make at home?

The majority of the timber used on The Timber Union courses is purchased through Mathews Timber.
Timber used in furniture items, big or small, is of a better ‘grade’ than what you might find in the rack of a general hardware store. That’s not to say you can’t get what you need there, but if you want a greater selection or something a bit more special, or exotic, a specialised furniture timber supplier is a better way to go. And I highly recommend Mathews Timber products and service, and they’re locally located!
